Hargrave Brothers Announced As New Mayors Of Rumson

May 23rd, 2025 proved to be an important day in Rumson’s history.  Acting Mayor, Joseph Hemphill, yielded the position to a pair of smart and community-minded brothers for the day.

9-Year Old Bryant and 6-Year Old Riley were appointed Mayors For The Day, a special prize that their parents won at the PTO Auction this past Winter.  They started the day meeting with “Former” Mayor Hemphill in their new office.

Afterwards, Officer Wrightington from the Rumson P.D showed them around the Police Department including a tour of a Police cruiser and special viewing of the cells.  He also gave them their fingerprints and an “evidence bag” filled with fun gifts.

Next, the new Mayors did an inspection of the EMS facility, eyeballing some of the cool safety gear the Emergency team uses to help residents.

A high point of the day for the duo may have been seeing all the interesting equipment that DPW uses to keep the Borough safe and sharp-looking including loaders, tractors, dump trucks and snowplows.

The two Mayors also met with all the Department heads to learn more about how the Borough staff tries to help people.

Riley and Bryant later met Chief McCarthy of the Oceanic Fire Department to see some of the firetrucks and equipment that the FD uses to keep everyone safe.

Both boys did a tremendous job as Mayors.  Mayoral power was officially handed back over to Mayor Hemphill while the boys focus on school, sports and summer fun.

A special thanks goes out to the Hargrave family for their involvement, the Rumson PTO, Mayor Hemphill and all the good folks at Borough Hall.
