Kay and Kit Smythe won the opportunity to be the “Official Parade Organizers” for the 2025 Memorial Day Parade and they certainly came through in a big way. The duo arrived long before the parade started, donning their patriotic flare. They received their clipboards, schedules and ceremonial whistles to get the hundreds of marchers organized.
They had several duties including lining everyone up properly, answering questions and keeping the enthusiastic crowd organized. Parade Assistant Dorothy Whitehouse noted “The girls were fantastic and did a tremendous job”. After showing each organization where to line up, they kept the entire group on track with several announcements. Kit and Kay spoke to and gave crystal clear instructions to the antique car drivers, Mayor Hemphill, the Borough Council and the Police Department. Everyone was organized and prepared thanks to the dynamic duo of Smyths.
They closely watched the clocks, which inched towards 10 AM. At which time they instructed all the antique cars to “Start your engines”. Once everyone was set, they coordinated with Officer Morse of the Rumson P.D., blew their whistles and the parade was off and running. They quickly hopped into a beautiful classic sedan to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
Several spectators remarked how organized and wonderful the parade was, thanks to Kit and Kay. The parade continued safely through the streets of Rumson before the commencing at Victory Park. It was a wonderful day to celebrate our Military personnel (to which their dad is a former Marine) including those who have sacrificed their lives. The girls performed their role with class, enthusiasm and dignity, which the event deserved.
While they proved to be outstanding parade organizers, Kit and Kay will be returning to school, sports and summer fun for the immediate future. The entire community of Rumson applauds their effort, patriotism and the amazing job they performed.
